gnuplot is one of my favourite programs. Normally with unix tools you work in text in and output, but there are not many programs to turn that text into images. One of the normal data sets for output could be represented in bar chars. gnuplot fills a void in unix, two helpful outputs are PNG and ASCII, if you're into that.

I was going to write paragraphs about different graph outputs, but I've noticed that the samples cover more than what I'd cover.
